【 Kudokusan-Toshinji Temple】 The Jodo (Pure Land) Buddhism

Toshinji Temple is a temple of Jodo Buddhism that takes Amithaba (City Designated Cultural Property) as the principal of worship. The main gate of the temple is the remains of the east gate of Shiroishi Castle (Outer Citadel Ote Ninomon). On the temple premise is the grave of Oumehime and Daihachi. In 1615, during the siege of Osaka, Sanada Yukimura from Osaka side saw in the potential of the second generation Shiroishi Castle Lord, Katakura Kojuro Shigenaga to be a general of both wisdom and courage and entrusted 4 children to him. It is said that Oumehime and Daihachi is 2 of the 4 children entrusted to Katakura Kojuro Shigenaga. It is said that although the family temple of Katakura Clan is Kessanji Temple, Oumehime, the widow of Shigenaga, is born in western Japan and wished to be buried at a town where people from western Japan would pass by. The grave of Oumehime takes the shape of Cintamani-cakra. From the fact that the shape of the grave is similar to a person pressing against his cheek for having a toothache, superstitious belief that by drinking the shavings from the tombstone, one would be able to heal toothache is born. Moreover, there is also a Koyasujizo or guardian Ksitigarbha of childbirth at the temple. Koyasujizo is also known as “Nure Jizo” as before the festival on 23 August every year, rain will fall without fail 3 day before or after the festival. It is also said that if rain falls on the day of the festive itself, then one would receive blessings.
