【Joeizan-Kessanji Temple】Myoshin-ji School of the Rinzai Buddhism

Kessanji Temple of the Myoshin-ji School of the Rinzai Buddhism that is dedicated to the Nengeshakanyorai, is a historic temple built in the Keichou era year 13 (1608), by the Shiroishi Castle lord, Katakura Kojuro Kagetsuna as the Katakura family temple. The 1st generation Kagetsuna and the 2nd generation Shigenaga were buried here; however, the 3rd generation Kagenaga made his grave at Mt. Atagoyama (Shiroishi-shi, Fukuoka, Kuramoto).

A majestic 400-year-old Japanese cedar within the premises marks the grave of the 1st generation Kagetsuna. Even now the lively appearance of the Japanese cedar is like the gallant figure of Kagatsuna watching over the castle town of Shiroishi. Kessanji Temple is a temple with the tomb of many great people such as “Eleven-face Koyasu Kannon” of Katakura clan, the tomb of Hokkaido Matsumae Castle lord, Matsumae Yoshihiro’s fifth son, Matsumae Yasuhiro, and his son Hirokuni, and tomb of the sumo wrestler Tanikaze. Kessanji Temple is a temple with beautiful views of the four seasons with many historical ruins and monuments.

【Second temple of the Katta Sanjusan Fudasho/the Shogun’s vermillion seal can be obtained here.】
