Katakura Gobyousho

Katakura Gobyousho is a tomb made of 10 big stone statues and a tombstone on a stone pavement surrounded by granite Tamagaki (a fence surrounding a Japanese Shinto shrine). As a tomb of a daimyo’s retainer, this is said to be a sight not seen in other parts of Tohoku area.

Main Text: The mausoleum of generations of Katakura Castle Lord is located at Mt. Atagoyama (Shiroishi City, Fukuoka Kuramoto area) that is visible from Shiroishi Castle. The third generation castle lord, Lord Katakura Kojuro Kagenaga, on 14 October, the death anniversary of the first generation castle lord, Lord Kagetsuna, held a reburial for Lord Kagetsuna and the second generation castle lord, Lord Shigenaga by moving their tomb from Kessan Temple and erected a Amithaba Statue as their tombstone. Until the 9th generation castle lord, stone statues were used as the tombstone, only the 10th generation castle lord, Lord Munekage (late 1871) has a pillar tombstone. The tomb is surrounded by granite Tamagaki with 10 big stone statue and a tombstone erected on top of stone paving. As a tomb of a daimyo’s retainer, the tomb is said to be a valuable sight not seen in other part of Tohoku area. One of the tombstone belongs to Lady Akiko, the wife of the 7th generation castle lord, Lord Murakadoko. Amongst the wives of castle lords buried outside the mausoleum of Kessan Temple and Toushin Temple, Lady Akiko, due to the fact that she is the daughter of Sendai Castle Lord, Lord Yoshimura, is the only person to be buried together with the other castle lords.
