Located right between Shiroishi Castle and JR Shiroishi Station, Sumaru House is a historic merchant house that offers visitors a glimpse into the charm of Shiroishi’s castle town.

Originally the residence of the Watanabe family, a wealthy merchant family, this building consists of traditional storehouses (Misegura) and a main house (Omoya) built from the mid-Meiji period to the Taisho period. The beautiful architectural style and historic atmosphere have been carefully preserved to this day.
Throughout the year, Sumaru House showcases traditional Japanese crafts, including artworks made with Shiroishi Japanese paper (Washi) and handmade crafts.
In addition to the permanent displays of Japanese paper crafts, seasonal events and special exhibitions introducing Japanese culture and traditional craftsmanship are also held.
Passing through the gate, visitors will find a Japanese garden decorated with seasonal trees and flowers.
Enjoying the view of the garden from the veranda of the house feels like stepping back in time to the beautiful days of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Admission is free, and staff members are available to provide guided tours of the building.
Today, Sumaru House and the adjacent “Sumairu Hiroba” are used as venues for various events throughout the year, offering unique experiences that can only be found in this castle town. The venue is also available for anyone to use.

From late February to early March, the “Sumaru House Hina Doll Exhibition” is held.
The impressive seven-tiered display of Hina dolls, stretching approximately 8 meters in length, is truly a sight to behold. In addition, colorful decorations such as “Kokeshi Hina Dolls” and “Hanging Hina Dolls” beautifully decorate the interior of the house.
The “Shiroishi Castle Kimono Festival,” held in mid-October, is a major event that attracts kimono fans from far away, with more than 1,000 visitors attending over the three-day festival.
The “Mock Wedding” performed by a real couple is one of the highlights. Visitors can also enjoy searching for their favorite kimono and Japanese accessories sold at the plaza and inside Sumaru House. The event is enjoyable even for those who are new to kimono.
When we visited Sumaru House, a special exhibition of Shiroishi Japanese Paper Lights (Washi Akari) was being held. The atmosphere of the traditional storehouse combined beautifully with the soft, gentle glow of the Washi Akari, creating a truly magical space.
Washi Akari workshops are also held from May to July. Anyone can participate.

"Kitchen ORTO in Kurara"
Located near Sumaru House, “Kitchen ORUTO in Kurara” is a restaurant created by renovating and relocating a traditional storehouse.
The restaurant offers lunch and dinner featuring healthy dishes made with organic vegetables grown in their own garden. This café-style restaurant is within walking distance from Shiroishi Station, making it a convenient and welcoming spot for visitors and travelers.
