A household estate owned by the Watanabe’s who ran wholesale paper stores and other businesses since the Edo period, now also used to hold special events!!

Sumaru Yashiki•Sumairu Square is located in the town center and was once run by a wealthy merchant and was a vibrant place. Sumaru Yashiki•Sumairu Square is located between Shiroishi Castle and Shiroishi Station.
Currently, events special to a castle town are held here throughout the year by utilizing Kura Shops and the main building that is built between mid Meiji Era and Taisho Era.
Walk pass the door at Sumaru Yashiki and you will enter a time slip back to the olden days of Meiji and Taisho Era. At Sumairu Yashiki you will find a Japanese garden brimming with seasonal flora and faunas. Many visitors to Shiroishi City stop by this wonderful place and according to the staff here, many of them share wonderful stories and thought with the staff working at Sumairu Yashiki.
There are a variety of events held at Sumairu Plaza. During the “Shiroishi Castle Downtown Kimono Festival” held in October, many people wearing kimono of their choice participated. The number of participants grows with the year. There is also the traditional marriage event, “Bridal Procession” that is participated by actual couples that made it all the more a touching event.

There is also an exhibition of paper made armours and helmets as well as costumes fitting experience available on request. The atmosphere of Sumaru Yashiki embodies the Japanese elements of “Ichigo Ichie”, which has the meaning of “cherishing the one chance of meeting in life”, and “Go-En”, which has the meaning of “the fate or chance to be able to meet”. Here, you get to experience the “seasons” of a castle town.
