Bukeyashiki (Samurai Residence)

Ushirokoji is a bukeyashiki or a samurai residence made by the Former Koseki Clan. Ushirokoji is a quiet residence facing Sawahata River that runs along Shiroishi Jouhoku and Sannomaru of the outer moat of Shiroishi Castle. The building is a designated cultural property of Miyagi Prefecture.

At a corner of the peaceful street facing the flowing Sawahata River on the northern side of Shiroishi Castle, Sannomaru outer moat of Shiroishi Castle, there is a Former Koseki Household that once served as the stewards of Katakura Household. Once, there were many middle class samurai residence. The Former Koseki Residence is confirmed to be built at 1730. The roof of the main building has a hipped thatch roof design while the house has a simple layout of a Japanese style living room, storage room and tatami room.

In 1991, with the gift of the main building, doors and walls from Koseki Household to Shiroishi City, the main building was restored. The living room is opened to the public and many seasonal events are held there. Since then, it has become a resting place for citizens and tourists. Lively trees and clear streams envelopes the Former Koseki Residence. We recommend you take a walk around the samurai residence. The atmosphere and scenery of castle town will leave a lasting impression on you.
